Shapes Word Search

Round, square and everything in between. Our shapes word search hides the shapes children are learning in one grid, from the CIRCLE to the HEXAGON. Pick a difficulty and start spotting.

Every shape in one grid

Shapes are everywhere, and learning their names is an early-years milestone. This word search gathers the basics β€” the CIRCLE, SQUARE and TRIANGLE β€” the trickier ones from the PENTAGON to the OCTAGON, and even some 3D shapes, from the CUBE to the SPHERE.

Each puzzle pulls a fresh selection from the list, so the set changes every time you play β€” gentle on Easy, and a longer-word challenge once the diagonals and backwards words appear on Hard.

Flat shapes and solid shapes

The grid covers both kinds of shape. There are the flat (2D) ones β€” the CIRCLE, SQUARE, TRIANGLE, RECTANGLE and OVAL, plus picture shapes like the STAR, HEART, DIAMOND, CROSS, ARROW and CRESCENT. Then there are the solid (3D) ones you can hold β€” the CUBE, SPHERE, CONE, CYLINDER, PYRAMID and PRISM β€” alongside the many-sided PENTAGON, HEXAGON and OCTAGON.

The clever names that count the sides

Lots of shape names are a hidden counting lesson, because they come from old Greek words for numbers. A TRIANGLE has three angles, a PENTAGON has five sides ('penta' means five), a HEXAGON has six ('hexa'), and an OCTAGON has eight β€” the same 'oct' as an octopus's eight legs. Once children spot that trick, a tricky word like 'octagon' suddenly makes sense, and they can almost guess how many sides a shape has from its name alone.

Shapes also split neatly into two families: flat 2D shapes you draw on paper, and solid 3D shapes you can pick up. A CIRCLE drawn flat becomes a SPHERE as a ball; a SQUARE becomes a CUBE like a dice; a TRIANGLE becomes a PYRAMID or a CONE. Spotting shapes in the real world β€” a clock is a circle, a STOP sign an octagon, a slice of pizza a triangle β€” turns this from spelling practice into early geometry, which is exactly why shapes are such a staple of early maths.

Great for an early-maths topic

Shapes are a staple of early maths β€” Easy mode suits the youngest learners, while longer names like HEXAGON give older children a good stretch. Play online, print a PDF pack, or use Make Your Own to build a grid from the shapes your class is learning.

Frequently asked questions

Which shapes are in the word search?

All the basics and more β€” circle, square, triangle, hexagon, plus 3D shapes like cube and sphere. Each puzzle uses a fresh selection.

Does it include 3D shapes too?

It does β€” alongside the CIRCLE, SQUARE and TRIANGLE you'll find the PENTAGON, HEXAGON and OCTAGON, plus 3D shapes like the CUBE, SPHERE, CONE, CYLINDER and PYRAMID.

Is it good for an early-maths topic?

Perfectly β€” shapes are a staple of early maths. Easy mode uses a small grid with no diagonals or reverse words.

How to play

Drag across a word, or tap its first and last letter β€” both work. Each word you find locks in with its own colour and ticks off the list, so you always know what's left to find.

Want a tougher challenge? Switch to Medium or Hard for a bigger grid with diagonal and reverse words. Stuck on one? Tap Hint for a nudge, or Solve to reveal the whole grid β€” and hit New any time for a completely fresh puzzle.
