How a robot senses and moves
A robot works in a loop that's a bit like the way you do: sense, think, act. First a SENSOR gathers information β measuring light, distance, heat or touch, the robot's version of eyes and skin. Then a PROGRAM running on a tiny computer decides what to do. Finally an ACTUATOR β often a MOTOR or SERVO turning GEARS and JOINTS β actually moves the arms, wheels or legs. Take away any one of those three and the robot just sits there.
The word 'robot' is surprisingly young: it was coined in a 1920 Czech play by Karel Δapek, from a word meaning 'forced labour'. Today real robots do the jobs we'd rather not β exploring Mars, welding cars, or going where it's too dangerous for people β and most look nothing like the HUMANOID robots of films; many are just a single clever arm.
