Great thinkers have appeared in every age, and the words are here. There are the Enlightenment minds LOCKE, HUME, KANT, ROUSSEAU and VOLTAIRE, the rationalists DESCARTES, SPINOZA and PASCAL, the Stoic SENECA and EPICURUS, the early scientist-philosopher BACON and the religious thinker AQUINAS, plus later figures HEGEL, MILL, MARX, NIETZSCHE, RUSSELL and SARTRE.
Big questions and famous ideas
Philosophy means 'love of wisdom', and each name here is tied to a big idea you may already know. SOCRATES taught by asking question after question — still called the 'Socratic method' — and famously said the only thing he knew was that he knew nothing. His student PLATO taught ARISTOTLE, who in turn tutored Alexander the Great, so three of history's greatest thinkers form a single chain. CONFUCIUS, on the other side of the world, taught rules for living well and treating others kindly that still shape much of Asia today.
