Carving, casting and big ideas
Sculpture is one of the oldest art forms, and these names shaped it. MICHELANGELO carved his towering marble 'David' from a single block when he was in his twenties, and believed his job was simply to free the figure trapped inside the stone. The Greek PHIDIAS made giant statues for ancient temples, while Auguste RODIN's 'The Thinker' is one of the most recognised sculptures in the world. They worked in many ways — carving stone, casting bronze, or moulding clay.
Modern sculptors made art look completely new. Antony GORMLEY's enormous 'Angel of the North' stands beside a motorway in England.
