Shoeing a horse is a licensed job

A FARRIER does considerably more than nail metal to a hoof. The hoof wall is keratin, like a fingernail, with no feeling in the part the nails go through — but the sensitive tissue is only millimetres away, and getting it wrong leaves the animal lame.

It is skilled enough that in Britain it is illegal to shoe a horse for payment unless you appear on a professional register, under an Act of Parliament passed in the 1970s specifically to stop unqualified people damaging horses. Most farriers train for around four years, much of it at a forge.

Zoo animals are asked, not caught

A modern ZOOKEEPER trains animals to take part in their own healthcare. A big cat learns to press a paw against the mesh so blood can be taken, a sea lion opens its mouth for a dental check, an elephant presents a foot for trimming. All of it is rewarded with food, and all of it is voluntary — the animal can walk away.

The alternative used to be sedation, which carries real risk every single time. The other half of the job is enrichment: puzzles, scents and hidden food designed to give clever animals something to work at, because an intelligent animal with nothing to do is a miserable one.

Two years to raise a guide dog

A guide dog spends its first year with a volunteer puppy raiser, learning to be unbothered by buses, shops, crowds and other dogs. Formal training follows: stopping at kerbs, judging whether a gap is wide enough for a person as well as a dog, and — the extraordinary part — refusing a command that would walk its handler into traffic.

Teaching an animal to disobey, selectively and for a reason, is not a small thing. Each dog costs tens of thousands of pounds to bring through, almost always paid for by donations, and the volunteers who raise the puppies hand them back at the end of the year.

The vet who treats everything

A VET studies for five or six years and comes out qualified to treat a small zoo. A doctor learns one species in enormous depth; a vet learns cats, dogs, horses, cattle, sheep, rabbits, parrots and whatever arrives in a cardboard box, each with its own anatomy, drug doses and diseases.

And the patient cannot explain anything. Much of the skill is reading behaviour, feeling for what is wrong, and questioning a worried owner carefully enough to discover that the dog was seen eating something unspeakable in the garden on Tuesday.

There is a job for whatever you like

Horses: the FARRIER, the STABLE hand, the riding instructor. Birds of prey: the FALCONER, working in a tradition old enough to be recognised as living cultural heritage in more than a dozen countries. Wild animals: the RANGER, the WARDEN and the wildlife hospital. Pets: the GROOMER, the TRAINER, the dog WALKER, the pet SITTER, the KENNEL and the AQUARIUM.

What all of them need is patience and an eye for small changes. No animal can tell you that something hurts, so the entire trade rests on somebody noticing that today it is standing slightly differently.

How to play

Drag across a word, or tap its first and last letter — both work. Each word you find locks in with its own colour and ticks off the list, so you always know what's left to find.
