A teacher who thought he had failed
CONFUCIUS lived from about 551 to 479 BC, during a time when China was split into warring states. His Chinese name was Kong Fuzi, Master Kong; the Latin form was made up by Jesuit missionaries in the sixteenth century. He wanted a government post so he could put his ideas into practice, travelled for years looking for a ruler who would listen, and never really found one. He died believing he had not succeeded.
What he did have was students. He was one of the first people in China to teach anyone who wanted to learn, rich or poor, and after his death they collected his sayings into the ANALECTS. His ideas later became the official philosophy of the Chinese state and shaped life across China, Korea, Japan and Vietnam for two thousand years.
The main ideas
Confucius believed a peaceful SOCIETY begins with good people and good relationships. The central quality is ren, usually translated as BENEVOLENCE or humaneness — real care for others. It is expressed through li, meaning RITUAL and MANNERS: the everyday forms of courtesy, ceremony and RESPECT that show people how to treat each other.
FILIAL piety, respect and care for parents, sits at the heart of it, and extends to honouring each ANCESTOR. Five key relationships — ruler and subject, parent and child, husband and wife, older and younger sibling, friend and friend — each carry duties in both directions, and when they are kept, ORDER and HARMONY follow. The ideal is the JUNZI, the exemplary person, who acts from VIRTUE rather than fear of punishment.
A golden rule, told the other way round
Asked for one word to guide a whole life, Confucius is recorded in the Analects as answering reciprocity: do not do to others what you would not want done to yourself. It is close to the golden rule found in many religions, phrased as a limit rather than a command.
MENCIUS, the most important follower, born about a century later, argued that people are naturally good. His example was simple: anyone who suddenly saw a small child about to fall into a well would feel alarm and want to help, without thinking about reward — proof, he said, that goodness is already in us and only needs growing.
Exams for thirteen centuries
Because Confucius taught that government should be run by the wise and good, LEARNING became the way into power. From the seventh century until 1905, Chinese officials were chosen by imperial examinations based on the Confucian classics. A SCHOLAR could spend years memorising the texts, and the tests were sat in rows of tiny locked cells over several days. In theory anyone could rise through them, whatever their family.
Whether Confucianism is a religion is still debated. It says little about gods or an afterlife and is mostly about ETHICS and how to live, but there are Confucian temples, and ancestor rituals remain part of TRADITION for many families. Confucius is still honoured as China's great TEACHER and SAGE, and his birthday is Teachers' Day in Taiwan.
