Why hot air floats
The whole trick of a HOT AIR BALLOON comes down to one simple fact: warm air is lighter than cold air. When the BURNER fires its FLAME up into the ENVELOPE, it heats the air inside until that air weighs less than the cooler air outside — and just like a bubble in water, the lighter balloon floats upward and begins to RISE. To come back down, the PILOT simply lets the air cool, and the balloon gently sinks.
Steering is the clever part, because there isn't really any. A balloon has no engine and no rudder, so it can only go up and down — to travel sideways it has to catch the WIND, and winds blow in different directions at different heights. So a skilled PILOT climbs or drops to a new ALTITUDE to find a breeze going the right way, then lets the balloon DRIFT along with it. Hot air ballooning is also the oldest kind of human flight: the first passengers — famously a sheep, a duck and a rooster — went up over 240 years ago, long before aeroplanes.
