Lewis Carroll wasn't really a novelist — his real name was Charles Dodgson and he was a shy Oxford maths lecturer. The whole adventure began on a sunny afternoon in 1862, when he took a rowing trip with three young sisters and invented a tale on the spot to keep them entertained. One of them, ten-year-old Alice Liddell, begged him to write it down; three years later it became a published book, and ALICE became one of the most famous girls in literature.
Carroll's love of logic and riddles is stamped all over WONDERLAND. The Mad HATTER's unanswered RIDDLE ('Why is a raven like a writing desk?'), the playing-card army of the QUEEN of HEARTS, and the way ALICE keeps changing size with a sip of POTION or a bite of cake are all word-and-logic games dressed up as nonsense. The grinning CHESHIRE cat even gave us a common phrase — 'grinning like a Cheshire cat' — which is why the book is such a rich pick for an English lesson on imagination and wordplay.
