Dr SEUSS was really Theodor Geisel, and 'Doctor' was a joke — he never finished the doctorate his father wanted, so he borrowed the title for his books. His most famous one started as a bet: his publisher wagered he couldn't write a story using only 50 different words. Geisel won, and the result was GREEN EGGS and HAM — count them and there really are exactly fifty, from 'I' and 'am' to SAM.
That tight, bouncy, easy-to-decode style was no accident. The CAT in the HAT was written deliberately to replace the dull 'See Spot run' readers of the 1950s with something children actually wanted to finish, using a controlled list of simple words.
