Halloween Word Search

Something wicked this way words. Our Halloween word search hides every spook and treat of the spookiest night, from a grinning PUMPKIN to a cackling WITCH. Pick a difficulty โ€” if you're brave enough.

Every spook and treat in one grid

Halloween is the year's most gleefully creepy night, and this word search packs in all the frights. You'll track down the monsters โ€” the WITCH, the VAMPIRE, the shuffling ZOMBIE and a classic DRACULA โ€” the props from CAULDRON to BROOMSTICK, and of course the all-important CANDY.

Each puzzle pulls a fresh selection from the list, so a different spell is brewed every time you play โ€” gentle on Easy, and a Hard-mode haunt once the diagonals and backwards words appear.

The story behind the spooks

Halloween is far older than the costumes and CANDY. Its roots lie in an ancient Celtic festival called Samhain, which marked the end of the HARVEST and the start of winter โ€” a night when people believed the line between our world and the world of spirits grew thin. The name 'Halloween' itself comes from 'All Hallows' Eve', the night before the Christian All Saints' Day on 1 November.

Even the glowing PUMPKIN has a backstory. People once carved scary faces into turnips to frighten away wandering spirits, following an Irish legend about a trickster named 'Stingy Jack' โ€” which is why the carved lantern is still called a jack-o'-lantern. Irish settlers took the custom to America, found pumpkins easier to carve, and a worldwide tradition was born.
