How a beat is built from scratch
Unlike a rock band, electronic music usually has no live instruments at all — it's assembled, sound by sound, inside a computer. A SYNTH (short for synthesiser) creates notes electronically, letting a PRODUCER invent tones that no real instrument could make, from a warm pad to a screaming lead. A SEQUENCER lines those sounds up in time, a SAMPLER chops snippets of other recordings into new patterns, and a FILTER sweeps the brightness up and down — the trick behind that rising tension just before the DROP.
The styles are mostly defined by their BEAT. HOUSE and TECHNO ride a steady four-beats-to-the-bar pulse made for dancing, TRANCE adds soaring melodies, and DUBSTEP is built around a half-speed beat and a bass WOBBLE you feel in your chest. It all comes alive at the RAVE and the FESTIVAL, where a huge SUBWOOFER turns the BASS into something physical.
