Loud, fast and raw
Punk stripped music back to its rawest form, and this word search gathers its spirit. You'll be finding the sound β LOUD, FAST and RAW, built on a THREE CHORD riff, a snotty SNARL and a whole lot of ATTITUDE.
Each puzzle pulls a fresh selection from the list, so the gig changes every time you play β gentle on Easy, and a Hard-mode anthem once the diagonals and backwards words appear.
Do it yourself
Punk was as much an attitude as a sound. It was DIY to the core β bands rehearsing in a BASEMENT or GARAGE, making their own ZINE, with no rules but plenty of CHAOS. There's the look β the MOHAWK, the LEATHER jacket, the SPIKES and the SAFETY PIN β and the moves, from the POGO to the MOSH pit. A true REBEL stirring up a RIOT, with GRUNGE waiting just around the corner.
Anyone can start a band
Punk burst out in the mid-1970s as a deliberate REBELLION against rock that had become slick, overblown and full of long, show-off solos. Bands like the Ramones, the Sex Pistols and The Clash played short, LOUD, FAST songs on just a THREE CHORD riff β and that simplicity was the whole point. A famous fanzine even printed a drawing of three chords with the caption 'now form a band', summing up punk's most powerful idea: you don't need to be a virtuoso, you just need ATTITUDE and something to say.
That spirit had a name β DIY, 'do it yourself'. Punks recorded their own singles, booked their own gigs in a BASEMENT or GARAGE, made their own clothes with SPIKES and a SAFETY PIN, and wrote their own cut-and-paste ZINE instead of waiting for magazines or record labels. Musically it didn't last long in the charts, but its influence was enormous: it cleared the way for indie, GRUNGE and countless garage bands, and proved music could be made by anyone, anywhere. That makes punk a great topic for a music lesson on genres, decades and how songs are built from just a few chords.
