A land of ice and strange skies
The Arctic is a place of extremes. Unlike the Antarctic at the bottom of the world, much of the Arctic isn't land at all — it's a vast sheet of frozen sea ice floating on the ocean around the NORTH POLE, which is how a POLAR bear can roam far from any shore. The frozen TUNDRA beyond is too cold for trees, yet in its brief summer it bursts into mosses and tiny flowers. A towering ICEBERG is famous for hiding most of itself underwater — only about a tenth pokes above the surface.
The far north also has the strangest days and skies on the planet. For weeks in summer the sun never fully sets (the 'midnight sun'), and in deep winter it barely rises at all. On the darkest nights the sky can light up with the AURORA — the Northern Lights — shimmering green and pink as particles from the sun hit the air high above.
