Drips, stone and shadows
Caves are slowly shaped by water over thousands of years, and the words are here. A steady DRIP of water builds the pointy STALACTITE that hangs from the roof and the STALAGMITE that rises from the floor, sometimes meeting to form a stone PILLAR. They grow in soft LIMESTONE ROCK, sparkle with the odd CRYSTAL, and hide a huge BOULDER in the GLOOM. It's COOL, DEEP and HIDDEN down there — and an ECHO answers every sound, where only a BAT feels at home.
Carved by water, drop by drop
Most caves are carved out incredibly slowly by water. Rain soaks into soft LIMESTONE ROCK and very gently dissolves it, hollowing out a TUNNEL and a CHAMBER over tens of thousands of years. Inside, the same trick works in reverse: each DRIP of mineral-rich water leaves a speck of stone behind, building a STALACTITE down from the roof and a STALAGMITE up from the floor so slowly that some grow just a single centimetre in a hundred years. Given long enough, the two can meet in the middle to form a PILLAR. (An easy way to remember which is which: stalacTITES cling 'tight' to the ceiling.)
Deep inside, a cave is a strange and challenging place to live — totally DARK beyond your TORCH beam, cool and DAMP all year round. Yet some creatures love it: the BAT roosts there by day and flies out to feed at night, finding its way in the GLOOM using sound, much like the ECHO that answers your shout. Some animals that live their whole lives in caves have even lost their eyes and colour, since there's no light to need them. All that makes caves a brilliant crossover topic for nature and geography.
