Here's the surprise: a CORAL REEF isn't a rock and isn't a plant — it's built by millions of tiny animals called POLYPS, each one a bit like a miniature ANEMONE. As they grow, they build hard stony cups around themselves, and over hundreds and thousands of years those skeletons pile up into a vast reef. The Great Barrier Reef off Australia is so enormous it can be seen from space, making it the largest structure ever built by living creatures.
Reefs only cover a tiny fraction of the OCEAN floor, yet they're home to around a quarter of all sea life — which is why they're called the rainforests of the sea. Some of the friendships are remarkable: the CLOWNFISH shelters safely among an ANEMONE's stinging tentacles, and the PARROTFISH munches coral and helps make soft white sand. But reefs are fragile.
