A secret kingdom of their own
Fungi aren't plants and aren't animals — scientists give them a whole kingdom to themselves. The MUSHROOM you spot is really just the 'fruit' poking up to release SPORES; the main living thing is the MYCELIUM, a vast web of fine threads spreading through the soil out of sight. Some of these networks are astonishingly big: one honey fungus in America covers several square miles and is among the largest living things on Earth. Instead of seeds, fungi puff out millions of microscopic SPORES — give a ripe PUFFBALL a squeeze and you'll see them burst out like smoke.
Fungi are nature's great recyclers and helpers. By feeding on dead wood and leaves they make DECAY happen, turning old logs back into rich soil so the forest can grow again. We rely on them too: YEAST makes bread rise and is a fungus, some MOULD gives us medicines like penicillin, and EDIBLE kinds like the SHIITAKE, CHANTERELLE and TRUFFLE are prized in cooking. But the rule for foragers is golden — never eat a wild one unless an expert says it's safe, because a POISON TOADSTOOL can look much like a tasty MUSHROOM.
