When the world stopped being made by hand
For most of history, almost everything was made by hand, at home, by people and animals. The INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION, which began in Britain around 1760, changed that for good. The breakthrough was the STEAM ENGINE: by burning COAL to boil water, it could drive MACHINEs that never tired, so work moved out of cottages and into the giant FACTORY and cotton MILL. A single STEAM-powered LOOM could now do the work of many hand-weavers, and goods were made faster and cheaper than ever before.
The change touched everything. The LOCOMOTIVE and the RAILWAY let people and goods travel at undreamed-of speed, IRON and STEEL built bigger bridges, ships and machines, and cities swelled as workers poured in to find jobs. But PROGRESS came at a price — the early FACTORY could be dangerous and filthy, with very long hours and child labour, all under a permanent haze of SMOKE. That double story of dazzling invention and harsh working life is exactly why the Industrial Revolution is such an important history topic, and why it links neatly to lessons on the Victorians.
