The Norse world in one grid
The Vikings were explorers, traders and fearsome warriors, and this word search captures their world. You'll be hunting for the gods β ODIN, THOR, LOKI and FREYA β the tools of the trade, from the LONGSHIP to the round SHIELD, and the legends that surround them, from the SAGAS to mighty VALHALLA.
Each puzzle pulls a fresh selection from the list, so the voyage changes every time you play β gentle on Easy, and a Hard-mode raid once the diagonals and backwards words appear.
Words from the Norse world in the grid
The grid is full of Viking life and legend. Track the dragon-prowed LONGSHIP setting out on a VOYAGE to RAID and PLUNDER far-off shores, the WARRIOR with his SWORD, SHIELD and HELMET, and the fearless BERSERKER who fought in a frenzy. There's the NORSE language carved in RUNES, the icy FJORD of the homeland, the carved DRAGON on the prow, and the SAGA tales that kept these adventures alive.
Sailors who reached America first
The Vikings were far more than raiders. They were astonishing sailors, and their shallow, flexible LONGSHIP could cross open ocean and row up rivers, letting them trade and settle from Russia to Ireland. Around the year 1000, led by Leif Erikson, they reached North America β roughly 500 years before Columbus β and built a camp at L'Anse aux Meadows in modern Canada, the proof that they got there first.
Much of what we 'know' about them is myth, though. There's no real evidence Vikings wore horned HELMETs β that idea came from 19th-century opera costumes. What's genuinely theirs is the language and stories: RUNES were their alphabet, the SAGAS were long tales written down in Iceland, and four of our weekdays are named after Norse gods (Tuesday for Tyr, Wednesday for ODIN/Woden, Thursday for THOR, Friday for FREYA). That blend of real exploration and vivid mythology is exactly why the Vikings are such a popular history topic β and why this puzzle links neatly to a Norse mythology lesson too.
