The horned helmet was a costume designer's idea
No horned HELMET has ever been found in a Viking grave, and there are a great many Viking graves. The only largely complete Norse helmet recovered, from Gjermundbu in Norway, is a plain rounded iron cap with a spectacle-shaped guard over the eyes and nose. Horns on a helmet are also actively dangerous in a fight, giving an opponent something to grab or knock.
The image comes from the costume designer Carl Emil Doepler, who put horns on the singers for the first full staging of Wagner's Ring cycle at Bayreuth in 1876. It caught on immediately and has never gone away. Nineteenth-century Romantic nationalism did much the same to the rest of the picture, leaving the popular Viking looking like an opera set.
Mostly they were farmers, traders and settlers
The word VIKING describes an activity rather than a people — going raiding — and most Scandinavians never did it. The bulk of the population farmed, fished and traded, and even the famous expeditions were usually seasonal: sail in summer, be home for harvest.
The trade routes are the underrated part. Norse merchants ran down the rivers of what is now Russia and Ukraine to Constantinople and the Caspian, and Arab silver coins turn up in Swedish hoards by the tens of thousands. An Arab diplomat, Ibn Fadlan, met a party of them on the Volga in 922 and wrote a detailed and not especially flattering account. They also settled: Iceland, Greenland, Normandy, large parts of England, and Dublin, which they founded.
Leif Erikson reached America around the year 1000
L'Anse aux Meadows, at the northern tip of Newfoundland, was excavated in the 1960s and is a confirmed Norse site — turf buildings, iron nails, a smithy. A 2021 study dating tree rings in worked timber from the site pinned one year of occupation precisely to AD 1021, some 471 years before Columbus.
It did not last. The settlement appears to have been used for only a few years, probably as a base for gathering timber further south, and the sagas describe conflict with the people already living there. Runes, sagas and the words they left behind
RUNES were carved rather than written, so the letters are made of straight lines — curves are difficult in wood and stone. Around 3,000 runestones survive in Sweden alone, most of them memorials raised by families, and a good number are simply signatures: Viking graffiti scratched inside the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul and on a marble lion in Venice.
English is full of Norse. Sky, knife, egg, window, husband, anger, cake, leg, skin and both come from it, and so do Thursday and Wednesday — Thor's day and Woden's day, with THOR, ODIN, LOKI and FREYA all still in the week.
