Why we still wear the poppy
World War I ran from 1914 to 1918 and was, at the time, the deadliest war in history — so vast that people called it 'the war to end all wars'. Much of it was fought from the TRENCH: two lines of dug-out ditches facing each other across a churned strip of MUD called no man's land, where soldiers could be stuck for months in freezing, flooded conditions. New machines made it more terrible than any war before — the armoured TANK, the fighter AIRCRAFT and the SUBMARINE all saw their first major use here.
The fighting finally stopped on the ARMISTICE of 11 November 1918, at 11 o'clock in the morning — which is why remembrance falls at the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. The red POPPY became its symbol because the flower was one of the few things that grew in the shelled-up battlefields of Flanders, inspiring the famous poem 'In Flanders Fields'.
