The land of the pharaohs in one grid
Ancient Egypt is endlessly fascinating, and this word search gathers its treasures. You'll be hunting for the icons β the PHARAOH, the PYRAMID and the riddling SPHINX β the secrets of the tomb, from the MUMMY to the golden SARCOPHAGUS, and famous names like CLEOPATRA and TUTANKHAMUN.
Each puzzle pulls a fresh selection from the list, so the dig changes every time you play β gentle on Easy, and a Hard-mode excavation once the diagonals and backwards words appear.
Words from the Nile in the grid
The grid is packed with the vocabulary of the Nile. Hunt down the picture-writing HIEROGLYPHS and the SCRIBE who carved them onto PAPYRUS, the towering OBELISK and grand TEMPLE, the lucky SCARAB beetle and the jackal-headed god ANUBIS. There's the long line of a ruling DYNASTY, the many GODS the Egyptians worshipped, the TOMB sealed against robbers, and the famous CURSE said to guard it.
How the pyramids and mummies really worked
The Egyptians built to last, and they did: the Great PYRAMID at Giza stood as the tallest structure on Earth for nearly 4,000 years, raised from over two million blocks of stone with nothing but ramps, ropes, muscle and astonishing planning. It was a giant TOMB, built so a PHARAOH's body β and treasure β could journey safely into the afterlife, which is also why the SPHINX still crouches on guard nearby.
Making a MUMMY was just as careful. Embalmers dried the body with salt, wrapped it in linen, and sealed it inside a painted SARCOPHAGUS surrounded by everything the soul might need. We know so much about it because the Egyptians wrote it all down in HIEROGLYPHS β a script no one could read for 1,400 years until the Rosetta Stone cracked the code. When Howard Carter opened TUTANKHAMUN's near-untouched tomb in 1922, newspapers spun the deaths that followed into the legend of the mummy's CURSE, and Ancient Egypt has been a classroom favourite ever since.
