A dramatic dynasty
The TUDOR DYNASTY ruled England through some of its most dramatic years, and this word search gathers it. You'll be finding KING HENRY the Eighth, famous for his six WIVES, his second wife Anne BOLEYN, and his daughters QUEEN ELIZABETH and 'BLOODY MARY'.
Each puzzle pulls a fresh selection from the list, so the court changes every time you play β gentle on Easy, and a Hard-mode royal drama once the diagonals and backwards words appear.
Kings, queens and the court
The Tudor court was a place of power and danger, and the words are here. There's the KING and QUEEN on the THRONE in the PALACE, the COURTIER seeking favour, and the constant fear of TREASON β which could lead to the TOWER or being BEHEADED. Henry's split with the church closed every MONASTERY and divided the land between CATHOLIC and PROTESTANT. There was JOUSTING for sport, and the great defeat of the SPANISH ARMADA β all part of the ROYAL story.
Six wives and a changed country
Generations of children have memorised the fate of KING HENRY VIII's six WIVES with the rhyme 'divorced, beheaded, died, divorced, beheaded, survived'. The drama wasn't just gossip: when the Pope refused to let Henry divorce his first wife so he could marry Anne BOLEYN, Henry broke England away from the CATHOLIC church, made himself its head, and closed and stripped every MONASTERY in the land β a religious earthquake that split families into CATHOLIC and PROTESTANT and could turn a wrong belief into TREASON, punished in the TOWER or on the block.
His children kept the rollercoaster going. Young Edward pushed the country Protestant; his half-sister Mary swung it violently back to Catholic, earning the grim nickname 'BLOODY MARY'; then ELIZABETH I steadied it for 45 years, a golden age of Shakespeare, exploration and the famous defeat of the SPANISH ARMADA in 1588. With only the THRONE, the PALACE and a COURTIER's whispered ambition between safety and the scaffold, it's no wonder the Tudors are one of the most gripping β and most taught β periods in British history.
