Our place in the cosmos
Our solar system has eight planets, all held in their ORBIT by the GRAVITY of the Sun — which is itself a STAR, just a very close one. They range from tiny, rocky MERCURY to the giant gas world JUPITER, big enough to swallow over a thousand Earths. Whizzing among them are lumps of rock and ice: an ASTEROID is rocky, a COMET is icy and grows a glowing tail near the Sun, and a METEOR is the streak of light when one burns up in our sky.
Space is almost unimaginably vast. Light from the Sun takes about eight minutes to reach us, yet it's the nearest star by far — the next is years away at light speed. To study it, scientists use the TELESCOPE to peer deep into the COSMOS, and send a ROCKET, SATELLITE or ASTRONAUT out to explore. Humans first walked on the MOON back in 1969.
