Dinosaurs ruled the Earth for an astonishing 165 million years — far, far longer than humans have been around — across the time geologists call the Triassic, JURASSIC and Cretaceous periods. They came in every size, from chicken-sized hunters to the colossal DIPLODOCUS, longer than three buses end to end. Some were a plant-eating HERBIVORE like TRICERATOPS; others a fearsome meat-eating CARNIVORE like the T-REX.
Almost all of them vanished around 66 million years ago, most likely after a giant ASTEROID struck the Earth and changed the climate — which is why we call them EXTINCT. Everything we know comes from the FOSSIL bones, eggs and footprints they left behind, slowly turned to stone and dug up by scientists.
