Weather Word Search

Whatever the forecast, it's puzzle weather. Our weather word search hides every kind of sky in the grid, from bright SUNSHINE to a rumbling THUNDERstorm. Pick a difficulty and see what's brewing.

Every kind of sky in one grid

Weather shapes every single day, and this word search gathers all of it. You'll track down the everyday β€” RAIN, SNOW, WIND and CLOUD β€” the dramatic, from THUNDER and LIGHTNING to a HURRICANE or TORNADO, and the words forecasters love, like HUMIDITY and CLIMATE.

Each puzzle pulls a fresh selection from the list, so the forecast changes every time you play β€” gentle on Easy, and a Hard-mode storm once the diagonals and backwards words appear.

What makes the weather

Most weather comes down to water and air on the move. The Sun warms the sea and land, water rises as invisible vapour, then cools high up to form a CLOUD β€” and when the droplets grow heavy enough they fall as RAIN, or as SNOW, HAIL or SLEET if it's cold enough. It's the same water going round and round, which is why it never runs out.

A THUNDERstorm shows off nature's power: LIGHTNING is a giant spark of electricity, and THUNDER is the sound of the air it suddenly heats. Because light travels faster than sound, you see the flash before you hear the rumble β€” count the seconds between them and you can roughly tell how far away the storm is. One last thing forecasters are careful about: weather is what's happening today, while CLIMATE is the usual pattern over many years.

A bright idea for the classroom

Weather is a brilliant early-science topic, and a word search makes the vocabulary fun β€” great for geography and science lessons, and a handy quiet-time activity on, fittingly, a rainy day. Easy mode keeps the grid small with no diagonals or reverse words. Play online, print a PDF pack, or build your own grid with Make Your Own.
