Biology Word Search

The science of life itself. Our biology word search hides the building blocks of living things, from the tiny CELL to the whole ORGANISM, in a grid of letters. Pick a difficulty and explore life.

Life, from cells up

Biology is the study of living things, and this word search gathers its essentials. You'll track down the building blocks β€” the CELL and its NUCLEUS and MEMBRANE β€” that make up every TISSUE and ORGAN of an ORGANISM, right down to the PROTEIN and ENZYME that keep it running.

Each puzzle pulls a fresh selection from the list, so the lab changes every time you play β€” gentle on Easy, and a Hard-mode study once the diagonals and backwards words appear.

From microbes to ecosystems

Life ranges from the microscopic to the planet-wide, and the words are here. Meet the single-celled AMOEBA, the MICROBE and BACTERIA, the floating PLANKTON and the FUNGUS. Learn how MITOSIS divides cells, how the GENOME and CHROMOSOMEs pass on traits, how EVOLUTION shapes every SPECIES, and how ECOLOGY links each VERTEBRATE to its HABITAT.

The big ideas of life

One of the most important ideas in all of science is that every living thing is made of CELLs. Some ORGANISMs, like the AMOEBA, are a single cell; others, like you, are made of trillions, organised into TISSUE, ORGANs and whole body systems. Inside almost every cell is a NUCLEUS holding the instructions for building and running that creature.

Those instructions are written in DNA, coiled into CHROMOSOMEs β€” the complete set is called the GENOME β€” and passed from parents to offspring, which is the heart of GENETICS. Over countless generations, tiny differences add up through EVOLUTION, the process Charles Darwin described, slowly shaping the millions of SPECIES alive today. And ECOLOGY studies how all those living things depend on one another and on their HABITAT, from the smallest BACTERIA to the largest VERTEBRATE.

Great for a 'living things' topic

It pairs perfectly with a science lesson on life and living things β€” Easy mode keeps the grid small with no diagonals or reverse words. Play online, print a PDF pack, or use our Make Your Own tool to build a grid from your own biology terms.

Frequently asked questions

What's in the biology word search?

The science of life β€” cells, organisms, tissues and organs, plus genetics, evolution, microbes and ecology. Each puzzle uses a fresh mix.

Does it cover cells and genetics?

Both β€” the CELL, NUCLEUS and MEMBRANE plus the bigger picture: GENETICS, the GENOME, EVOLUTION and ECOLOGY.

Is it good for a 'living things' topic?

Great fit β€” pair it with a science lesson on life and living things. Easy mode keeps the grid small with no diagonals or reverse words.

How to play

Drag across a word, or tap its first and last letter β€” both work. Each word you find locks in with its own colour and ticks off the list, so you always know what's left to find.

Want a tougher challenge? Switch to Medium or Hard for a bigger grid with diagonal and reverse words. Stuck on one? Tap Hint for a nudge, or Solve to reveal the whole grid β€” and hit New any time for a completely fresh puzzle.
