Lakes Word Search

Calm waters ahead. Our lakes word search hides the great lakes of the world, from vast SUPERIOR to deep BAIKAL, in a grid of letters. Pick a difficulty and dive in.

The world's great lakes

Lakes hold most of the world's liquid fresh water, and this word search gathers the famous ones. You'll track down North America's Great Lakes β€” SUPERIOR, MICHIGAN, HURON, ERIE and ONTARIO β€” plus the deepest of them all, Russia's BAIKAL, and Africa's VICTORIA.

Each puzzle pulls a fresh selection from the list, so the shoreline changes every time you play β€” gentle on Easy, and a Hard-mode voyage once the diagonals and backwards words appear.

From mountain lakes to mysterious depths

Lakes come in every size and setting. Visit the alpine GENEVA, COMO and GARDA, Scotland's mysterious LOCH NESS, the high-altitude TITICACA, and Africa's long TANGANYIKA. We've hidden the lakeside words too β€” the SHORE, a wooden PIER and JETTY, a calm RIPPLE, a quiet INLET, the FRESHWATER itself and the man-made RESERVOIR.

How lakes form, and why they matter

A lake is a body of water surrounded by land, and most fill up in hollows scooped out long ago. The five Great Lakes of North America β€” the largest group of FRESHWATER lakes on Earth β€” were gouged out by giant glaciers during the last ice age. Russia's BAIKAL formed a different way, in a crack where the Earth's crust is slowly pulling apart, making it both the deepest and oldest lake in the world.

Lakes matter because they store drinking water, support fish and wildlife, and offer somewhere to swim and sail. People even build their own β€” a RESERVOIR is a man-made lake, usually held back by a dam, that supplies water to nearby towns.

Great for a water topic

It pairs nicely with a geography lesson on fresh water, the water cycle and landforms β€” Easy mode keeps the grid small with no diagonals or reverse words. Play online, print a PDF pack, or use our Make Your Own tool to build a grid from your local lakes.
