The science of an eruption
What makes a volcano tick? The words are all here. Deep down, MOLTEN MAGMA rises from the MANTLE, then bursts from the VENT and CRATER at the SUMMIT as fiery LAVA (the same rock, just renamed once it reaches the surface). An ERUPTION throws out ASH, PUMICE and SULPHUR, sends a TREMOR through the ground, and can unleash a deadly mudflow called a LAHAR. A collapsed crater leaves a giant bowl called a CALDERA.
Volcanoes are sorted by how lively they are: an ACTIVE one could erupt at any time, a DORMANT one is 'sleeping' but could wake, and an extinct one is finished for good.
Where volcanoes happen
Most volcanoes sit where the giant plates of the Earth's crust meet β and a huge horseshoe of them rings the Pacific Ocean, nicknamed the 'Ring of Fire'.
