US States Word Search

Fifty states, one big grid. Our US states word search hides the states of America from coast to coast, from CALIFORNIA to MAINE. Pick a difficulty and take a road trip across the map.

Coast to coast in one grid

From the Pacific to the Atlantic, this word search gathers states from every corner of the country. You'll track down the big names β€” CALIFORNIA, TEXAS and FLORIDA β€” wide-open spaces like MONTANA and WYOMING, and the far-flung outliers ALASKA and HAWAII.

Each puzzle pulls a fresh selection from the list, so the union is reshuffled every time you play β€” gentle on Easy, and a Hard-mode road trip once the diagonals and backwards words appear.

Fifty states, one country

The United States is made up of 50 states, but it didn't start that way. It grew from the 13 original colonies along the east coast and expanded westward over the years, adding states until ALASKA and HAWAII became the 49th and 50th in 1959 β€” which is why they're the two that sit apart from the rest.

The states vary hugely. ALASKA is by far the largest by area (and mostly wilderness), CALIFORNIA has the most people, and tiny Rhode Island could fit inside its bigger neighbours many times over. It's that mix of giant, wide-open states and small, crowded ones that makes the map so interesting.

A road-trip-worthy classroom theme

Learning the fifty states is a classic school challenge, and a word search makes it genuinely fun β€” a staple of US geography lessons and a great way to get the names to stick before pointing them out on a map.

With no timer, it's a relaxed cross-country drive that suits classroom and quiz night alike.

Make it match your region

Want just one part of the country β€” New England, the West Coast, the Midwest? Use our Make Your Own tool to list those states and print matching copies for the class. Each grid here uses a fresh mix, so play a few rounds to cover all fifty.
