How a river works
A river begins at its SOURCE — usually high ground, where rain or melting snow trickles together — and flows downhill all the way to the sea, an unstoppable part of the water cycle. Along the way it picks up speed through the RAPIDS, snakes side to side in a curving MEANDER, and grows as each smaller TRIBUTARY joins the flow.
Near the end it slows and widens into an ESTUARY, or fans out into a triangle of channels called a DELTA, before reaching its MOUTH at the coast. The longest river is usually said to be the NILE in Africa, though the mighty AMAZON in South America carries far more water than any other.
Rivers and the rise of cities
Many of the world's first great civilisations grew up along rivers, because they offered fresh water, rich soil for farming and an easy way to travel and trade. Ancient Egypt depended on the NILE, the first cities of Mesopotamia sat between the TIGRIS and Euphrates, and the GANGES remains sacred to millions today — which is why a rivers word search pairs so well with a history or water-cycle topic.
