Deserts Word Search

Into the dunes we go. Our deserts word search hides the driest places on Earth, from the vast SAHARA to the rocky GOBI, in a grid of letters. Pick a difficulty and brave the heat.

The driest places on Earth

Deserts cover about a third of the planet's land, and this word search gathers the famous ones. You'll track down the giants β€” the SAHARA, the GOBI, the KALAHARI and the NAMIB β€” plus the American deserts, the MOJAVE and SONORAN, and the world's driest, the ATACAMA.

Each puzzle pulls a fresh selection from the list, so the sands shift every time you play β€” gentle on Easy, and a Hard-mode trek once the diagonals and backwards words appear.

What actually makes a desert?

Here's the surprise: a desert isn't defined by heat or sand, but by how little rain it gets β€” under about 25 centimetres a year. That means the largest desert on Earth isn't the SAHARA at all, but frozen ANTARCTICA, a 'polar desert' where almost no rain or snow ever falls. The SAHARA is simply the biggest hot desert, and the ATACAMA in Chile is so dry that some weather stations there have never recorded a drop.

Deserts are tough, ARID, BARREN places of SAND, DUST, DROUGHT and SCORCHING days (that often turn freezing at night). Yet life finds a way: the spiny CACTUS stores water in its stem, the CAMEL can go for days without drinking, and a rare OASIS marks the few spots where water reaches the surface.

Life in an extreme land

From Australia's red OUTBACK to the wandering NOMAD peoples who have crossed these lands for centuries, deserts are full of fascinating stories of survival β€” and the odd shimmering MIRAGE that tricks thirsty travellers. It's a great fit for a geography lesson on climates, biomes and how plants and animals adapt.
